You may have see it on TV, or perhaps been to a live event, and there’s no doubt punkin’ chunkin’ is gaining popularity around the country. RV campers turn out in force with everything from big diesel pusher motor homes to travel trailers, 5th wheels and even popup campers. The 26th Annual World Championship Punkin’ Chunkin’ promises to be the biggest and best pumpkin hurling competition yet. RV campers come from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, as well as other neighboring states to attend all three days of this event.
If you don’t know what punkin’ chunkin’ is, competitors gather together in a large field with a variety of pumpkin throwing contraptions, trying to “out-chunk†each other and hopefully set new records for launching pumpkins great distances. To the casual observer, this may sound a bit silly, but there is a serious side to building the machines that do the actual “chunkin.” Styles include slingshots, catapults, trebuchets (whatever they are), centrifuges, and pneumatic (compressed air) cannons. Competitor teams work year-round to build and perfect their machines and pumpkin throwing techniques. The Science Channel broadcasts video of the event and devotes a section on their website explaining the physics behind the fun.
Held in Bridgeville, Delaware, this years’ chunk will be held Nov 4th, 5th, and 6th. Proceeds benefit a number of scholarship funds and charity organizations including St. Jude Children’s Hospital. In addition to the punkin’ chunkin’ contests, a Miss Punkin’ Chunkin’ Pageant, Pumpkin Cooking Contest, and Chili Cook Off  are also held.
Sites for RV camping are available, and reservations are required. The cost is $65 per day or $175 for the three day event, which includes 2 tickets for each day you camp. Check the frequently asked questions on their website so you’ll be aware of rules and restrictions like the use of generators, etc. Sorry, no pets are allowed.
Hank Black, owner of Delaware Digital Video Factory which produces and sells video DVDs of the event, bought his motor home Media Camping Center and sent this picture of his motor home at last year’s event. What a great photo, isn’t it? Thanks, Hank!
