Pennsylvania’s Own Seashore
Thinking about a summer camping vacation at the shore? Most people visit ocean beaches for their seaside vacations, but you may already know that Pennsylvania has its own seashore resort.
Located on the southwest shore of Lake Erie, near the junction of Interstates 79 and 90, (about a five hour drive from Harrisburg, PA), the city of Erie and surrounding areas boast recreational opportunities that rival the better known Atlantic Ocean beach resorts.
In fact, there’s so much to see and do, that you’ll have to allow plenty of time to do it all. From beautiful Presque Isle State Park and its beaches, to auto racing at Lake Erie Speedway, and everything in-between, there are so many diverse and interesting activities, there’s sure to be something for everyone in your family.
Originally noted as a bustling Great Lakes industrial center, in recent years the area has emerged as a major recreation area and vacation destination. Steeped in history and the lore of the Great Lakes Region, “Erie was a maritime center after the American Revolution, then as a railroad hub during the great American westward expansion,” according to Wikipedia. ”It became an important city for iron and steel manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution and thrived well into the 20th century with big industry. Erie is an emerging center for biofuels and environmental research. Tourism plays an increasingly important role in the local economy with over 4 million people visiting Presque Isle State Park and other attractions.”
Included among the major attractions of the area are:
Waldameer Park and Water World
Presque Isle Downs and Casino
Victorian Princess Paddle Wheel Steamer Cruises
The Great Lakes Seeway Trail
The Erie Zoo and Botanical Gardens
The Bayfront District
