Do It Yourself Spring Shakedown Checklist

Getting ready for camping season involves a few simple steps to ensure an enjoyable camping adventure the first time out and the entire season. Use this handy checklist to make sure that your RV is ready to go when you are.

Begin checking and de-winterizing your RV a few weeks before your first outing. Planning ahead will allow time to correct any problems and will make your first camping trip trouble free.

For All RV types
____ Inspect the batteries and cables for damage and corrosion.
____ Remove and clean the terminals with battery terminal cleaner if needed.
____ Make sure the battery fluid is at the correct level. Use only distilled water.
____ Plug the electric “shore line” into an approved 120v AC circuit for 24 hours or more to charge the RV battery.
____ Check all interior lights, porch lights, compartment lights and hitch light.
____ While connected to AC power, operate the electrical appliances to be sure they work.
____ Inspect the roof and exterior, checking roof, vents, and skylights for damage. Check sealants around vents, antennas, air conditioners, etc. inspect refrigerator vent for any damage or blockage.
____ Inspect interior ceiling for signs of water leaks.
____ Check windows and doors for water leaks.
____ Open widows a few days or so before your trip to air out and freshen your RV.
____ Flush fresh water system with clean water. Tank fresheners or baking soda products may be used. Be sure water heater bypass valves (if so equipped) are in the proper position for use. Clean or replace any water filters.
____ Run the water pump, and flush the toilet and check for any leaks.
____ Check tires for proper inflation (see your owner manual or check manufacturer website). Don’t forget the spare.
____ Inspect tires for spliting, cracking or dry rot.
____ Operate slide outs checking for smooth operation. Lubricate moving parts per owners' manual.
____ Check slide out seals when fully extended for damage, proper sealing.
____ Check slide out covers for condition and operation.
____ Open all awnings checking condition and operation.

Towables
____ Check hitch and towing equipment for wear, rust, or damage. Lubricate as needed per owners manual.
____ Connect trailer-towing plug to tow vehicle and check lights including
____ Turn signals
____ Brake lights
____ Markers & taillights

Folding Camping Trailers & Expandable Trailers
____ Open and extend tent completely and inspect fabric for damage.
____ Clean fabric as needed according to manufacturer’s recommendation and apply seam sealant or waterproofing.

Motorhomes

Engine and drive train
Check fluid levels
____ Engine oil, change as needed
____ Transmission oil
____ Radiator coolant
____ Brake fluid
____ Power steering fluid

Check all lights including
____ Markers & taillights
____ Brake lights
____ Turn signals
____ Back up lights
____ Docking lights
____ Compartment & utility lights

____ Check belts for damage and proper tension. Do this with the engine turned OFF!
____ Run the engine and turn on the air conditioner.

Generator
____ Check oil level, change as needed
____ Run the generator

Levelers
____ Check fluid level (hydraulic levelers) and operate the system, checking for leaks and other mechanical problems.
____ Lubricate moving parts per owner manual

Most Important
Each spring schedule an LPG leak test and appliance check with our Service Department. Safe operation of LPG appliances like the stove, refrigerator, and furnace will add to your camping enjoyment and piece of mind.
