Getting the most from your Tires and Batteries

Two areas where you can do it yourself and save money are properly maintaining your tires and batteries. Caring for these vehicle essentials will lenghten their service life and ensure that you are not stranded somewhere with an emergency repair bill.

Perhaps the most important rule of tire maintenanace is proper tire inflation. Maintaining the correct pressure in your tires will improve fuel economy and handling, and help prevent premature wear and blowouts. Tires should also be checked regularly for signs of weather cracking, road hazzard damage, and abnormal wear.

RV Tire manufacturers Michelin, and Goodyear both have very informative websites specifically geared for RV owners which will give you all the facts about proper tire care. If your RV is equipped with a different brand, check for their recomendations in your owners manual or on the web.

Most RV and automotive batteries require maintenance to keep them at peak performance levels. Be sure to check your owners manual to determine if your batteries are maintenance-free or not. Maintenance-free batteries still require periodic inspections for corrosion on the terminals and cables, as well as protection from freezing in winter weather. A great article on caring for batteries appears in the Summer 2008 Discovery Express magazine. While it is geared to motor homes, there is a lot of good information that all RV owners can use.
